The 'gods' Are Back—And They’re Wearing Yoga Pants: Neo-Paganism Exposé

What you worship isn’t always obvious, to you.

You can always spot a false god by the size of the promises it makes—and the bodies it demands. Counterfeits reveal themselves by the oversized claims they make and the real things they take. Ancient idols wanted bulls and babies. Modern ones want your attention span, your fertility, your manhood, your motherhood, your children, your calendar, your silence, your soul… and they still want babies. They promise ease without effort, healing without repentance, freedom without boundaries, and enlightenment without truth. They whisper, “You can have peace without sacrifice, power and influence without submission, and pleasure without consequence.”

The gods are back—not that they ever left—and this time, they wear yoga pants and lab coats. They don’t show up and announce they’re here to replace your faith and dismantle your values. They arrive softly, lit by ring lights, speaking convincingly, soothingly, and affirmingly. They keynote tech conferences, headline health expos, and curate wellness retreats. They publish bestsellers and host calming and entertaining podcasts. They wear fitness watches, carry tote bags that say “Good Vibes Only,” and offer “empowerment” in exchange for obedience.

Often, we believe them. Not because we’re weak, but because we’re tired. Tired of disillusionment. Tired of complexity. Tired of churches that preach truth but don’t live it. So we scroll for something simpler. More beautiful. More affirming. And what we find—on screens, in yoga studios, in spiritual‑but‑not‑religious spaces—is not nothing. It is something. Something old. Something seductive. Something pagan.

And that’s where this essay begins. You may find it hard to read. You may bristle at parts. Because the truth is, many of us—myself included—have been taken in. We’ve unknowingly welcomed idols into our homes, our routines, and even our devotions. We’ve mixed the holy with the hollow. I’m not writing from judgment but from alertness and clarity.

Because idols don’t care what you call them. They only care that you turn to them rather than to Him. The old idols never really died. They just got rebranded.
