Stop Overthinking God’s Will and Start Living It
How to Hear God In the Here and Now
We have turned God’s guidance into a self-help project and then wonder why we can’t hear Him. Many approach their spiritual life, specifically seeking God’s will or direction, as if it were a secular goal-setting or personal improvement endeavor. We look for complicated, multi-step plans, formulas, or techniques to find God’s will.
We hunt for “signs.” We chase the perfect book, the perfect preacher, the perfect plan. We want a ten-year blueprint from Heaven, color–coded and laminated. And all the while, the living God is speaking in the one place we almost never look: the very next thing in front of us.
If this piece helps you name some of your own anxiety about God’s will and gave you a clearer way forward, I’d love to walk with you further. Subscribe to Grow in Grit and Virtue for more reflections that blend faith, psychology, and real-life practice. Share this with a friend who is stuck chasing signs or overthinking every decision. And if something here stirred you, hit reply or leave a comment—I’d be honored to hear where God is asking you for your next yes.
This isn’t new. God hasn’t changed His way of speaking. He still speaks now the way He spoke “in former times” – through real life, in real time. In the early Church, most believers didn’t have spiritual directors, podcasts, or reading plans. They had the apostles, the Scriptures being preached, their ordinary work, their families, their suffering, their neighbors, and the quiet movements of their own conscience. And they tried, very simply, to be faithful to what God put in front of them, one moment at a time.
