Alligators lurking.

Some days, I feel like an alligator.

Not because I have an ancient, armored exterior (although, after a sleepless night and before three cups of coffee, I’m close). And not because I have scaly skin (though let’s be honest, winter does me no favors), or because I’d win any stealth awards creeping up on my kids when they’re too quiet. No, it’s because, like the alligator, I spend my days lurking in the unpredictable waters of life, waiting for the right moment to strike—or knowing when to just float and let things go.

Alligators are masters of balance—between patience and action, power and gentleness, resting and lunging. And isn’t that the daily struggle?

Parenting? Waiting for the right time to correct your kid’s terrible attitude without snapping (literally or figuratively). This is alligator work.
Navigating workplace politics? Trying to remain calm while your inbox fills with crises that were "urgent" three days ago. Who ate my leftover burrito from yesterday? Alligator territory.
Life in general? Resisting the urge to emotionally chomp down on every frustrating situation while also knowing when to stand your ground.

The American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) is a creature of paradox—a patient hunter, a gentle parent, a creature of raw power that also exhibits surprising intelligence and even, in some ways, a sense of humor. And if you look closely, this prehistoric predator has a lot to teach us about justice, wisdom, kindness, and even the ability to laugh-all without losing our cool (or our metaphorical teeth).
