normal. Compromise to us rarely looks evil. It comes dressed as pressure, survival, ambition, fatigue, and the quiet logic that says a small betrayal of truth is simply the price of living in the world as it is.

Do you recall the stretch of time when Lance Armstrong was not merely famous but a national myth? Even though I’m not a cyclist I remember being enamored by the headlines. He was the hard-jawed cyclist in the yellow jersey, the cancer survivor who seemed to embody grit, defiance, and American resolve. He not only won races, he became a symbol people wanted to believe in. His bracelets were everywhere. His story sat in doctors’ offices, living rooms, locker rooms, and charity banquets. He looked like proof that suffering could be mastered, that discipline could become redemption, that a man could stare down death, rise, and carry a nation’s admiration on his back.

Then it came apart. The doping allegations, the sworn denials, the lawsuits, the stripped titles, the lifetime ban, the public collapse. But even then, what was most revealing was not only that he lied. It was how he thought about the lie. When he finally admitted what he had done, he still spoke as if the moral problem were negotiable, as if cheating inside a corrupted system did not really feel like cheating at all: “I didn’t view it that way. I viewed it as a level playing field.” That is relativism. A man so formed by compromise that reality itself had been bent to protect the lie. The truth was fixed. He doped. He deceived. He ruined reputations to protect the fiction. But relativism trains the conscience to treat truth as elastic, morality as environmental, and guilt as optional. We have seen the same logic elsewhere—in athletes who tell themselves everyone is doing it, in politicians who call cruelty strategy, in everyday people who rename dishonesty as survival or spin. Once truth becomes something to manage instead of something to obey, the soul does not merely make a mistake. It begins to lose its shape.

Subscribe now

Share

When was the last time you felt that you had fallen short and some part of your character needed honest attention?

Often the first sign of conviction does not come in prayer or in some dramatic burst of moral clarity. It comes through other people. An adult child lashes out. A husband or wife names the hurt or disappointment, and our first reaction is not sorrow but self-defense. We are sitting at dinner with friends while our children tell old family stories, and what begins as laughter turns, almost without warning, into something more painful. In their version of the memory, we do not come across very well. Our first instinct is to defend ourselves. They did not know everything. They got part of it wrong. It was more complicated than that. We want to say we are not as bad as it sounds.

“Conviction, regret, and self-accusation rarely arrive in grand cinematic moments. They show up as an interior soundtrack beneath ordinary duty.”

But later, when the guests leave and the house goes quiet, when we are left to clear the table, rinse the dishes, and load the dishwasher, the moment comes back from our point of view, and then other memories come with it. Long before children, there were our own parents, our own wounds, our own unchecked habits. We begin to see the words we should have changed, the decisions we made too quickly, the attitudes we excused, the hurts we repeated instead of repaired.

That is often how conscience works. Conviction, regret, and self-accusation rarely arrive in grand cinematic moments. They show up as an interior soundtrack beneath ordinary duty, a hidden mental and spiritual burden of self-talk, moral replay, recurring flashes of honesty, and the ache of having missed the mark. The deeper trouble is not only guilt, but the way guilt begins to rearrange our sense of who we are before God.

“The real battle is often not whether we can admit sin exists, but whether we believe God’s mercy actually reaches us personally.”

We think, I know God forgives in general. I am less sure what He intends to do with me. And so the real battle is often not whether we can admit sin exists, but whether we believe God’s mercy actually reaches us personally. That is the hidden fear: Yes, God forgives, but what about me, with this memory, this shame, this repeated failure, this old regret? Our conscience is under strain, tangled with shame, repetition, and uncertainty about grace, afraid that our failures are becoming more permanent than the identity God gives us.

Share Grow Grit & Virtue (In Pursuit of God)

Subscribe now

We turned cardboard boxes into breastplates, cut cereal boxes into shields, wrapped wrapping-paper tubes with aluminum foil for swords, and wrote big block letters across everything: TRUTH, FAITH, SALVATION. Somebody stuck a cartoon Roman soldier on the flannel board. We marched around the room and sang songs with hand motions—“I’m in the Lord’s Army. YES SIR!”—and even a line from an old hymn, “Put on the gospel armor.” It was fun, and it clearly stuck in my memory. It just never entered my reality. I learned to decorate armor, not to wear it.

I realize now, Paul isn’t asking us to play soldier. He’s telling us to put on a Person. The “armor of God” is not a costume; it is Christ fitted to our fear, our desires, our habits, and our call (Romans 13:14). Ephesians 6:13 names the battleground plainly—“the evil day”—and then makes a promise: if we put Him on, we will “hold our ground.” The battle is not imaginary, and the Victor is already ours.

Share

Subscribe now

enough.

When he disembarked and saw the vast crowd, his heart was moved with pity for them, for they were like sheep without a shepherd; and he began to teach them many things. By now it was already late and his disciples approached him and said, “This is a deserted place and it is already very late. Send them away so that they can go find themselves something to eat somewhere else.” He said to them in reply, “Give them some food yourselves.” But they said to him, “Are we to buy two hundred denarii worth of food and give it to them to eat?” He asked them, “How many loaves do you have? Go and see.” And when they had found out they said, “Five loaves and two fish.” So he gave orders to have them sit down in groups on the green grass. The people took their places in rows by hundreds and by fifties. Then, taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he said the blessing, broke the loaves, and gave them to his disciples to set before the people; he also divided the two fish among them all. They all ate and were satisfied. And they picked up twelve wicker baskets full of fragments and what was left of the fish. Those who ate were five thousand men. Mark 6:34-44 (New American Bible Revised Edition NABRE).

Sometimes I just want to “get the needs out of my face.” I don’t call it that, of course. I call it “being realistic” or “protecting my bandwidth” or “I just need a minute.” But do you know that feeling when it’s coming at you from every direction—like you’re running a triage unit and the waiting room is your own life? This person needs a decision. That person needs a favor. Somebody wants an answer. Somebody wants a ride. Somebody wants reassurance. My wife needs me to handle something I’ve been postponing because it’s complicated and I’m tired. Work needs me to step into a situation that should not be my problem, except it is. The kids need things that don’t politely line up—help with something real, “fairness” adjudicated like it’s case law—which means I’m now the judge, the chauffeur, and the calendar manager. I spend the day moving needs from one place to another, trying to keep everybody fed and steady, and underneath it all is that unflattering thought: I want the needs gone. I want the noise gone. direction—you’re not alone. For some, the Bible can seem dry, hard to understand, or disconnected from modern life. It’s difficult to connect an ancient world of vineyards, kings, and coins you’ve never handled to your world of school drop-offs, marriage tension, a tight budget, a mind that won’t shut off, and a phone that keeps demanding your attention.

This common struggle often leads us to treat Scripture like any other hard text: we skim, cherry-pick a verse for a quick takeaway, force an application, or quit. Many of us learned to approach the Bible purely as a moral instruction manual—a dry cycle of finding a rule, feeling guilty, and striving to be better. This method might produce religious information, but it ultimately leaves the soul starved.

Lectio Divina Starter Template

249KB ∙ PDF file

Download

I've included a printable guide to help you get started. It’s a living word from a living God—your Creator—spoken to real sons and daughters with real burdens. It’s not just that the Bible contains truth; it’s that God uses it to speak personally, to draw you into relationship, to expose what’s actually going on in your heart, and to meet you there. That’s why Christians from the earliest centuries have read Scripture prayerfully—not just to learn about God, but to hear Him. Over time, this prayerful reading took on a simple, repeatable shape—four movements that have been practiced in many settings: homes, churches, small communities, and monasteries where it was carefully preserved and handed on. It often goes by the Latin name Lectio Divina—“divine reading.” It’s a Christian way of reading Scripture as conversation with the Lord.

Subscribe now

Share

satisfy?” (Isa 55:2)

Behind every life that changes the world is the same restless search for something real. Whether you read a front-page obituary, a dog-eared memoir, or a late-night interview, you start to notice a common arc. An Oxford atheist becomes a reluctant convert who baptizes the imagination with children’s stories (C. S. Lewis). A slave trader stumbles into grace and pens the hymn the world can’t stop singing (John Newton). A brilliant philosopher studies truth to the end, enters Carmel, and dies in Auschwitz with a radiant peace (St. Edith Stein). A psychiatrist walks through a death camp and discovers that meaning—not comfort—keeps a person alive on the inside (Viktor Frankl). None of them began with all the answers. All of them began hungry. The people who found the most profound peace were often the ones who started with the least.

Share Grow Grit & Virtue (In Pursuit of God)

Subscribe now

Scroll the news or your own mental headlines—layoffs, breakups, burnout, the new thing you’re told to buy—and Isaiah’s question sits under all of it: “Why do you spend your money for what is not bread, and your labor for what does not satisfy?” (Isa 55:2). At first read, it can feel like a scolding, as if God is wagging a finger about your spending or your habits. But it’s more like an intervention: the moment someone who loves you puts the truth on the table and offers a better way. Isaiah isn’t shaming desire; he’s clarifying it. Desire is simply what you reach for when you ache. He holds up the “receipt”—where our time, money, and attention actually go—and shows how often we buy look-alikes: comfort without real connection to God, achievement without trust, escape without healing. No wonder we’re still empty after the purchase.

Matthew 11:28
Some days unravel in ways you never planned. Small troubles pile into heavier ones, and even the simplest tasks seem to fight against you. When the weight presses in, turn toward God. Lay your tired, strained heart in His keeping. In every moment of weariness, in every strain and stress, remember—His love holds you fast, and His rest is yours to receive.

Scripture makes this promise in the least likely moments. On the night before the cross, Jesus tells His friends, “Peace I leave with you” and “Take heart; I have overcome the world.” He says it with Gethsemane ahead and persecution certain. A jailed apostle writes of “the peace of God…guarding your hearts.” Two disciples, bruised by failure, find their hearts burning as the Lord walks with them on a dusty road. A prophet sings joy with barren fields and empty barns. Over and over, rest is offered not after the storm, but in it.

“In every moment of weariness, in every strain and stress, remember—His love holds you fast, and His rest is yours to receive.”

Subscribe now

Jesus speaks this promise not to the well-put-together but to the overloaded. He immediately adds, “Take my yoke upon you…for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” This rest is not sedation, zoning out, hiding, vacation-as-escape, or a “peace out” shrug. It is the deep relief that comes when a life is re-aligned to the pace and purpose of a soul rightly ordered to God. This peace is the “tranquility of order”: desires, duties, and loves set in their true places under Him. Our age is restless because it is disordered—too many masters, too little meaning. The heart comes to rest only in the Highest Good; nothing finite can carry the weight of our hope. Rest is not the absence of work; it is the presence of the right yoke—shared labor with a gentle Lord whose pace heals.
